28/09/22 LABIR of UME and CEDER-CIEMAT: collaborative exercise
Press release
CEDER AND UME (MILITARY EMERGENCEIS UNIT) SHARE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS EXPERIENCES BETWEEN THE LABIR AND CEDER’S LABORATORY
Soria, 28th of September 2022.
The Rapid Identification Laboratory or LABIR, as known in Spanish, is part of the Technological and Environmental Emergencies Intervention Group (GIETMA) of the Spanish military forces, and has been deployed at CEDER-CIEMAT from the 26th to the 30th of September. The objective is to participate in a manoeuvres exercise and share chemical analysis experiences between LABIR and the CEDER’s laboratory.
A total of 10 people from LABIR and 9 researchers and technicians from CEDER take part in this exercise. In addition, 8 people from military staff act as support.
During the week, participants are going to exchange knowledge and analyse different environmental samples such as rocks, volcanic ashes, or soil and water from polluted lagoons. While performing the analysis, different techniques such as CG-MS, ICP-MS, FTIR, Raman or SEM are used.
The techniques used by the LABIR laboratory are characterised by the immediate results they give in case of emergency or disaster, in order to identify pollutant compounds and microorganisms. On the other side, CEDER-CIEMAT uses procedures that takes more time, but that enable the identification of elements and pollutant compounds from the samples.
The experience exchange has been rewarding for both parts. Moreover, it will open the path to future collaboration to achieve a rapid, efficient and coordinated response in case of emergency or disaster between different public administrations.
