Radioactive Facilities

NAYADE Facility

Areas in which this installation applies:

  • Investigation and Development
    • Animal and plant genetics, in food preservation and microbiological sterilization.
    • Activation of chemical reactions such as polymerization in wood or chemical synthesis.
    • Irradiation of gemological materials such as the creation and modification of color centers or the differentiation of gemological materials.
  • Industry
    • Nuclear Industry for the accelerated aging of materials, equipment and components used in the nuclear industry (motors, electric cables, ...) to simulate the deterioration that they would experience under normal operating conditions, that is, management of the remaining life.
    • Space Industry, in which, through the use of irradiation devices at low dose rates, in simulation of cosmic radiation, the qualification of highly reliable components used in this industry is carried out.

Features of the facility:

  • Pool-type installation of 1.2 m on each side and 4.5 m of water depth, which provides sufficient biological shielding for 100,000 Ci of Cobaltoj-60. Currently, it has about 8,000 Ci distributed in 72 sources grouped in six batches of different activity.Pool-type installation of 1.2 m on each side and 4.5 m of water depth, which provides sufficient biological shielding for 100,000 Ci of Cobaltoj-60. Currently, it has about 8,000 Ci distributed in 72 sources grouped in six batches of different activity.
  • It has different cylindrical sample holders with which different types of materials can be irradiated at different dose rates depending on the sources that are available around them.
  • The 4.5, 6, 15 and 30 cm diameter source holders can be loaded with sources that provide dose rates between 9 Gy / h & 50 kGy / h and are normally used for research.
  • For industry, devices are available that can contain samples with diameters between 10 cm and 70 cm, for dose rates between 35 & 0.4 kGy / h respectively.
  • To irradiate electronic components for the space industry, a device is used that uses a flat configuration of the sources and that achieves dose rates between 2.5 kGy / h and a few Gy / h, as few as the associated measuring equipment is capable of measuring.
