Laboratories in the radioactive installation IR-08 for tests with radioisotopes

These laboratories are authorised for carrying out retention/transport experiments with many different radioisotopes. Currently this is the unique site in Spain where diffusion experiments with actinides and fission products can be carried out in different types of low-permeability materials. The group implemented diffusion tests at a medium scale, mimicking in-situ conditions both for clay and granitic rocks.

Furthermore, is the unique site in Spain with the capability of analysing the behaviour of radioactive colloids and their role on the overall RN transport in fractured rocks. The protocol for retention/adsorption experiments is focused to the application of thermodynamic models, including solubility and speciation studies.

These laboratories are equipped with:

  • Gamma counters;
  • Alpha-beta counters (liquid scintillation);
  • Autoradiography;
  • Ultracentrifugation;
  • Photon correlation spectroscopy;
  • Electrophoresis;
  • Raman spectroscopy;
  • Glove boxes (N2 or N2+ CO2 atmosphere) for tests under controlled atmospheric conditions;
  • Diffusion cells;
  • Erosion cells;
  • Hydraulic press;
  • Carbonation chamber;
  • Incubators.
