Soils play a fundamental role in mitigating and fighting Climate Change; they are the basis of landscapes, land ecosystems and agroecosystems. The conservation of soils and their functions are of vital importance for life maintenance. Soil is essential for nutrient availability, maintaining biodiversity and protection against floods; to mention some of the ecosystem services. The conservation of soils and the study of the effects of climate change as well as how to act against it is a priority line for the CoReS. Our projects are developed in Antarctica, in protected areas such as National Parks and in mountain soils, protecting this essential natural resource and studying interactions with other media (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere). In this line, we study organic matter, nutrient cycles, soil respiration, edaphic and mesofauna microbiology, soil-plant relations, and temporal and spatial changes. For these purposes, we include techniques such as isotopy, proximal and remote sensing. Protecting our soils is protecting our future.
